Hippopus hippopus
Very light cream-color mantle with many short tan
lines. Shell is lighter in color and much smoother
than Tridacna clams. I believe the H.h clams are
at least as hardy has the hardy T. clams. They are also
supposed to be tank-raised. They are certainly the
cheapest costing at most 1/3 to 1/2 that of a similiar-sized
Tridacna (excepting derasa which are almost as cheap).
The mantle of Hippopus sp clams does not extend beyond
the shell as it does in Tridacna sp (Delbeek).
