114 Variable Speed Routers

I think that I'm ready to dive into buying a new router. Crapsman just isn't
hacking it any more.

After looking at a bunch, I want to get a ~3hp model with plunge. As
this will spend a lot of its life upside down on a table, I think I
also want variable speed. (its only money, right?). My question is,
has anyone used the external variable speed units? Are they any good,
do they hurt the motor etc...? I like Makita's and Freud's routers but
they are not variable speed. The new Bosch is nice also (nice and
$$$). The Ryobi you can't get cause it seems to be back ordered for
ten years or so, and actually I found the feel just isn't as 'solid'
as the others.

It seems as though I would have more to choose from if I went with the
variable speed as an add on, but I don't want to have to worry about
reliability.
