I am soon to invest in my first router. I have been loking around and
reading information from all different sources and think that the Porter
Cable PC693 fits most of my needs. I just have some (many) question
before I take the plunge...so to speak :-)

It is a 1.5 HP plunge router that can handle both 1/4 and 1/2 bits. I
have seen prices localy around $180 and through the mail at about $165.
I am looking for some feedback on if this is a good selection and what
other models would be comprable/better buys. What will I not be able to
do with this router? Is the plunge router a better selection or should
I consider the fixed base routers more? Are plunge routers just as safe
to mount into a router table? I understand that the 1.5 hp motor will
not be large enough for some of the biggest bits, but is this a major
drawback? What won't I be able to do with this router that I may want to do.

Spielman in his Router Techniques book says that he feels the 2 - 3hp
routers are dangerous for beginners to use and should only be used by
experienced operators...is this true? This is one of the primary
reasons that I selected the 1.5hp model and not something larger....
