I use the Craftsman 1.5 hp router and have few other problems with it
such as eccentric collet which makes the bit rout the metal template bushings
and ruin both the bit and the bushing. But I did not encounter any problems
of router falling on the floor while loosening the thumb screw. This may be
partly because I use Sears router table which may have sufficient height than
other (possibly home) made. I simply hold and support the router below
with one hand and adjust the thumb screw with other hand. I have to do some
trial and error tightening/loosening and rotating the height adjusting
ring before I get the right cutting height. As a matter of fact I had trouble
removing the motor from the metal housing even after sufficiently loosening
the thumb screw.
