I use a Makita 2 HP plunge router. I usually use it as a poor man's
shaper in a table and have rarely if ever used it as a hand-held unit.
I have a cheapo B&D for the occasional low quality hand-held routing I
do.
I just had the (press fit) bearings on the Makita replaced for about
$25 at a local Makita repair store. I consider I got a reasonable
life from the bearings for the usage I have gotten from the router.
I saw a recent demo of the B&D Ulm (sp?) router - $400 is pretty big
bucks to spend for electronic controls in my opinion. I depend on
having a big motor and carbide bits to not drag the speed down when
routing. Why would anyone want to route at low speed?
