As you say, this is work -- you have to stoke it and keep it burning.

The big problem with forced-air heating in a workshop is that it blows
dust around. If you're doing any varnishing or the like you'll be
rather unhappy. Also, your filters will clog up pretty rapidly in a
sawdust environment.

For me, this is the method of choice. The actual heating element is
enclosed in metal and it is highly unlikely that sawdust will represent
a fire hazard. If you think to vacuum out the baseboards every year or
so you should be in great shape.
